Transmission & Power-Steering Fluid in UAE Heat

Why automatic transmission fluid (ATF) and power-steering fluid matter more in UAE heat, and when to change them. A practical guide from XB Brothers General Trading LLC.

Engine oil gets all the attention, but two other fluids quietly do hard work in UAE heat: automatic transmission fluid (ATF) and power-steering fluid. Both transmit force through hydraulics, both degrade with heat, and both are far cheaper to maintain than to repair. Here’s what to know.

Automatic transmission fluid (ATF)

ATF does several jobs at once: it transfers power through the torque converter, lubricates and cools the transmission, and operates the hydraulics that change gears. It works under high temperature and pressure — and heat is its main enemy. In UAE conditions, with stop-start traffic and hot ambient temperatures, ATF ages faster than the headline service figures assume.

Signs your ATF needs attention:

  • Rough, delayed or jerky gear changes
  • Slipping or hesitation
  • A burnt smell
  • Fluid that has darkened from clear red to brown

Don’t ignore these — worn or low ATF is a common path to expensive transmission failure. And note: automatic transmissions are fussy about specification, so always use the exact ATF your manufacturer requires. The wrong fluid can cause poor shifting or damage.

Power-steering fluid

Power-steering fluid is the hydraulic medium that makes the wheel light to turn. Over time it degrades and picks up contamination, and heat accelerates both. If the steering feels heavy, makes a whining noise, or the fluid looks dark and dirty, it is due for replacement with the correct specification. (Many newer cars use electric power steering with no fluid — check which your car has.)

Buying the right ATF and power-steering fluid

  • Specification is everything for ATF — match the exact fluid each transmission requires, so stock the right grades for the vehicles you serve.
  • Plan for shorter change intervals in UAE heat (towing, heavy loads and city traffic all count as severe service), which means steady demand for fresh fluid.
  • Use the exact specification each system requires; the wrong fluid causes poor shifting or damage.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I change automatic transmission fluid in the UAE?

Follow your manufacturer's schedule, but treat UAE heat as severe service and don't stretch it. Many vehicles benefit from an ATF change somewhere around 60,000–100,000 km, and sooner for heavy use, towing or city traffic. Heat is the main thing that ages ATF, so the hotter your driving, the more often it needs attention.

What are the signs of worn transmission fluid?

Signs include rough, delayed or jerky gear changes, slipping, a burnt smell, or fluid that has turned dark instead of clear red. Any of these warrants checking the fluid level and condition, as worn or low ATF can lead to expensive transmission damage — especially in the heat.

Does power-steering fluid need changing?

Yes. Power-steering fluid degrades and gets contaminated over time, and heat speeds that up. If steering feels heavy, makes noise, or the fluid looks dark or dirty, have it checked and replaced with the correct specification. Always use the fluid type your vehicle requires.

Can I use any ATF in my car?

No. Automatic transmissions are sensitive to fluid specification — the wrong ATF can cause poor shifting or damage. Always use the exact ATF specification your manufacturer requires. If you're unsure, check the handbook or ask your supplier for the correct grade.
